Passenger from Izmir–Ercan Flight Jailed for Drunken Outburst
A Northern Cyprus court has sentenced a 27-year-old man to 20 days in jail after he caused a drunken scene during a flight from Izmir to Ercan. The passenger, Engin Can Özçelik, was detained following the incident and now faces a 20-day prison term.
The disturbance occurred on September 15, around 9:30 AM, on a SunExpress flight en route to Northern Cyprus from Izmir. The passenger, who was under the influence of alcohol, became disruptive after expressing dissatisfaction with the in-flight service.
During the altercation, the intoxicated passenger hurled insults at the flight attendants, loudly cursed, waved his arms around, and even struck a stewardess. Upon landing at Ercan Airport, he was promptly taken into custody by local police.
The following day, Özçelik appeared in court, where he was charged with assaulting airline staff, consuming alcohol onboard, and engaging in disorderly conduct.
It was revealed that Özçelik is a citizen of the Republic of Turkey with no ties to Northern Cyprus.
After reviewing witness testimonies, the judge decided to sentence the suspect to a maximum of 20 days in jail.
