The Secretary-General of the UN assessed the likelihood of a full-scale conflict in the Middle East

UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated that the Middle East is on the brink of a full-scale conflict. The head of the organization called on the participating countries to reduce tensions and immediately take steps to de-escalate the situation.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres made this statement in his address at a meeting of the UN Security Council convened in connection with Iran's strike on Israeli military targets.

"The Middle East is on the brink. People in the region are facing a real threat of a devastating full-scale conflict," said the UN Secretary-General.

António Guterres added that "it is time to reduce tensions and de-escalate."

Recall that a massive attack on Israeli territory by Iran occurred overnight from Saturday to Sunday. A total of about 400-500 unmanned aerial vehicles and about 150 rockets were launched from Iran's western provinces. According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), 99% of them were intercepted or shot down. The damage from the attack was insignificant; in particular, one of the military bases in the Negev Desert in the south of the country was damaged. About 30 people were injured in the attack. There is no information about casualties.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry stated that the strikes on Israel were carried out in self-defense. The attack was a retaliatory move after Israel carried out an airstrike on the Iranian consulate building in Damascus on April 1. As a result of the attack, seven people from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps were killed, including two generals.

The authorities of the TRNC also reacted to the escalation of the situation in the Middle East.
