Flights Delayed at Ercan Airport Due to Dense Fog
A thick fog blanketed Northern Cyprus on the evening of the previous day, causing several flight delays at Ercan Airport due to severely reduced visibility.
The Instrument Landing System (ILS), which assists pilots during landings, was insufficient under these conditions. The system could not operate effectively below an altitude of 800 meters, while visibility dropped to less than 200 meters because of the dense fog.
As a result, an AJet flight from Ankara was diverted to Adana. Several other flights arriving from Istanbul, Antalya, Gaziantep, and Izmir managed to land after circling in the air for a period of time.
According to the airport's online schedule, another evening AJet flight from Istanbul to the TRNC was canceled. It remains unclear whether the cancellation was directly related to the weather conditions at Ercan Airport.
