TRNC Minimum Wage Commission to Review Union Objections Today
The TRNC Minimum Wage Commission will meet today to discuss union objections to the recently set minimum wage. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM.
According to the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, the meeting will be held behind closed doors, with no media access. The commission's decision will be announced in a written statement.
On January 17, the commission set the minimum wage at 37,818 TL per month (43,469 TL before taxes). The decision passed by a majority vote, but worker representatives voted against it. Unions were given 10 days to submit their objections.
In response, the Council of Ministers sent the approved wage back to the commission for reconsideration.
The Turkish Cypriot Trade Unions Federation (TÜRK-SEN), the TRNC Free Trade Unions Federation (KKTC Hür-İş), and the Teachers’ Union (KTÖS) have all objected to the approved amount. The commission will now review the decision, taking their concerns into account.
