The Atatürk Indoor Pool has been closed due to dangerous fecal bacteria
In Northern Cyprus, Escherichia coli bacteria have been found in the Atatürk Indoor Pool in Nicosia. The swimming area is closed indefinitely, and competitions have been canceled.
According to Veysel Erdogan Topcuoglu, the Director of the Department of Primary Medical and Sanitary Assistance, coliform bacteria were discovered during routine inspections.
Coliform bacteria (or Escherichia coli bacteria) are an indicator of the sanitary quality of food and water. The presence of these bacteria may indicate the presence of other pathogenic microorganisms of fecal origin, which can cause many diseases, especially gastrointestinal disorders. Due to the high risk of infection, the pool has been closed.
Routine pool inspections are conducted every month. Disinfection procedures have begun after the closure. When the pool will reopen is currently unknown.
