A decision has been made in Northern Cyprus to write off 90 percent of penalties for overdue payments by mosques for electricity. To do this, they will need to pay off all debts in advance.

The Council of Ministers of the TRNC has introduced an amendment to the decree issued in February, which has the force of law, regarding the collection of debts from mosques for electricity. According to the document published in the "Official Gazette", it has been decided to exclude 90 percent of the surcharge for late payment on advance payments.

According to the amendment to the main decree, which came into force on February 20, if the debts of mosques for electricity, associated with the Cyprus Stock Management, are paid to the Cyprus Turkish Electricity Authority (KIB-TEK) in advance, 90 percent of the penalties for late payment will be annulled.

The decision states that the need to restructure the debts of mosques arose "to avoid any disruptions due to electricity debts during Ramadan in mosques associated with the Cyprus Stock Management, and to prevent damage to the freedom of worship of the population".
