The Mayor of Girne Shares Updates on Sewer System Modernization
The Mayor of Girne, Murat Şenkul, has provided an update on the city's ongoing efforts to modernize its sewer infrastructure. According to Şenkul, the long-standing sewer issues in the Kervansaray area will soon be resolved with the construction of a new pumping station, which is expected to become operational within a month.
“In the past two years, we have laid a main sewer line extending from the inner parts of Girne to the border of Karaoğlanoğlu, ensuring the necessary infrastructure is in place before the completion of the new state hospital,” the mayor wrote in his statement.
During this time, the city has also installed a new sewer line on the eastern side of Doğanköy.
Looking ahead, Mayor Şenkul announced that work will soon begin on a sewer line west of Zeytinlik. Additionally, under a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) initiative, the city is upgrading and maintaining its existing pumping stations to enhance their efficiency.
The mayor also provided an update on the progress in Bellapais. As part of a comprehensive project, underground drainage, telephone, and electricity networks have been installed. The city is now replacing rusted iron and asbestos water pipes in the area to improve the water supply system.
“While our municipal company, Belpaz, carries out the excavation work, our water supply department is busy laying new water lines,” Şenkul explained.
