Cyprus to Upgrade Agios Dometios Crossing Point

The Technical Committee of the two communities is working on a plan to reconstruct the Agios Dometios checkpoint in Nicosia on the "Green Line," from the administration of Cypriots-Greeks. In this way, the authorities aim to eliminate traffic jams at the checkpoint, as well as on Democracy Avenue and the adjacent streets.

According to AlphaNews, to alleviate congestion, the plan includes expanding the number of lanes from two to three.

Simultaneously, a third police canopy will be installed to conduct necessary inspections.

Additionally, the reconstruction plan involves creating a pedestrian walkway in the vacant space that currently exists between the two traffic flows. It will be used to serve people, primarily Turkish Cypriots, who cross the border on foot in both directions.

The plans presented to the Technical Committee are in the final stages. It is expected that the period required to complete the work will not exceed several weeks.

The main goal is to deliver the upgraded Agios Dometios checkpoint by 2024.

Since 2003, when movement between the northern and southern parts of Cyprus was allowed, the number of people and vehicles crossing the Agios Dometios checkpoint daily has been steadily increasing.

According to the police, over the 10-year period from 2013 to 2023, the number of mutual crossings across the "Green Line" has increased by more than 1400%. In 2013, 90,229 vehicles and 188,219 pedestrians crossed the border, while in 2023, these figures reached 1,438,182 cars and 2,718,281 individuals.
