Special Lane Created at Ayios Dometios Checkpoint for Schoolchildren and Patients
In the Republic of Cyprus, a special lane has been established at the Ayios Dometios checkpoint for the passage of students residing in the north and attending schools in the south, as well as for patients in need of medical assistance.
According to the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs of Missing Persons and Detainees, Anna Aristotelous, the lane will be open to people living in the northern part of the island who either attend school in the republic or travel to republican medical institutions for treatment.
Anna Aristotelous noted that people resettled from Rizokarpaso, Ayia Triada, Ayios Andronikos, Kormakitis, and the general area of Karpasia face significant inconveniences due to the long distances they have to travel to the Ayios Dometios checkpoint, compounded by delays at the border crossing point.
Anna Aristotelous expressed gratitude to the Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Marilena Raunas, negotiator Menelaos Menelaou, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their cooperation in addressing this serious humanitarian issue.
It is reported that it is not yet clear whether the special lane will also be available for Turkish Cypriot schoolchildren and patients receiving medical assistance or attending schools in the Republic.
