Hit-and-Run on Nicosia–Güzelyurt Highway: Driver Arrested After Fatally Striking Pedestrian
A tragic hit-and-run accident occurred over the weekend in Northern Cyprus. A driver struck and killed a 24-year-old pedestrian on the Nicosia–Güzelyurt highway before fleeing the scene. Police have since arrested the suspect.
According to the police press office, the accident happened in the early hours of Sunday, around 12:40 AM. The pedestrian was crossing the road when he was hit by a speeding vehicle.
The driver fled immediately, leaving the victim with fatal injuries. Paramedics later confirmed that he had died at the scene.
Following an investigation, police located the suspect’s vehicle in Lefke—an SUV driven by Tahsin Yamaner, a local resident. Officers arrested him at around 5:00 AM the same day and took a blood sample for testing.
Yesterday, Yamaner appeared in court, where a judge ordered him to remain in custody for three days as the investigation continues.
