The new minimum wage in Northern Cyprus will be set from January 2024
The new minimum wage will be effective in Northern Cyprus from January 2024, with the exact amount to be determined during December. The Minister of Labor and Social Security, Sadiq Gardiyanoglu, announced this on the "Objectif" program on the Kıbrıs Postası TV channel.
The minister provided information about the work conducted by the committee for setting the minimum wage. The initial discussion took place last Tuesday.
According to Sadiq Gardiyanoglu, the employee representative at the committee meeting demanded an increase in the minimum wage by 48%, while the employers' side wants to limit it to 25%.
The new minimum wage should be unanimously determined based on real data and the needs of society.
The minister also noted that a sharp increase in the minimum wage would complicate business operations, and if the figure is low, people living on minimum wage will continue to "plunge into poverty."
Emphasizing that the new minimum wage will be set within the next month, Sadiq Gardiyanoglu stated that it will be implemented from January 2024.
