March Hunger Threshold Announced for Northern Cyprus
The Cyprus and Turkey Civil Servants Union (KTAMS) has declared that the "hunger threshold" for Northern Cyprus, as of March 31, 2025, stands at 28,324 Turkish Liras. This is the amount needed each month to provide a healthy, balanced, and sufficient diet for a family of four.
KTAMS President Güven Bengihan emphasized that the current inflation rate "does not fully reflect the hardships faced by the population." The union’s study breaks down the daily essential costs for healthy nutrition as follows:
-
Adult male: 252.97 TL per day, 7,589.10 TL per month
-
Adult female: 242.37 TL per day, 7,271.10 TL per month
-
Child (15–19 years old): 268.94 TL per day, 8,068.20 TL per month
-
Child (4–6 years old): 179.85 TL per day, 5,395.50 TL per month
The report was compiled by the Department of Inpatient Care Services of the Ministry of Health of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). The calculations were based on the required meal plan for a family of four, taking into account the cost of the necessary food items. Price analysis was provided by the TRNC Statistical Institute.
It is important to note that, according to data released by the Statistical Institute, inflation in the TRNC was 2.02% in January, 2.16% in February, and 4.28% in March. The overall inflation rate for the first three months of the year was 8.67%.
