Ilkan Varol, the Chief Administrative Auditor (Ombudsman) of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), has initiated an official investigation into the operations of nightclubs following the tragic death of an employee at the Prenses nightclub in Alayke. The investigation was prompted by widespread public concern over the incident, which has drawn attention to the issues surrounding nightclub establishments. Eight bi-communal non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have also called for a comprehensive inquiry into the tragedy.

According to the Ombudsman, the death of the young woman sparked significant public outrage and has increased dissatisfaction with the operation of nightclubs in the region.

“Following media reports about the tragedy at the nightclub, serious unrest emerged within society. Unfortunately, these venues have become a pressing social issue, accompanied by numerous related problems. This has created the need for a thorough investigation, which officially begins today,” said the Chief Auditor in an official statement.

To recap, the 25-year-old woman, who worked as an administrator at Prenses, tragically passed away earlier this week. Her body was found early Tuesday morning in one of the club’s rooms. Initial reports suggest the cause of death was suicide.

The incident has triggered a strong response in Parliament, with several members calling for the complete closure of all nightclubs across the country.

In addition, eight bi-communal NGOs focused on combating human trafficking have also demanded further investigation.

The petition was signed by:

  • Refugee Rights Association
  • Caritas Cyprus
  • Mediterranean Institute of Gender Studies
  • KAYAD
  • Prologue Consulting
  • Human Rights Platform
  • Cyprus Stop Trafficking
  • Cyprus Refugee Council

The organizations issued a statement underscoring that, despite the official ruling of suicide, a full and transparent investigation is necessary to uncover the true circumstances of the tragedy.

“We urge an examination of women’s freedom of movement, the conditions within these establishments, and any potential cases of psychological or physical abuse, coercion, or threats,” the statement read.
