TRNC Bakers Threaten to Halt Bread Production
Bakeries in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) are warning of a possible halt in bread production, citing economic pressures and a year-long freeze on bread prices.
Ömer Çıralı, President of the Bakery and Flour Industry Association (FUMDER), announced that production could come to a standstill as early as next week if the issue is not resolved.
The warning came after the head of the bakers' union met with TRNC Prime Minister Ünal Üstel. Following the meeting, an official statement was made to the press.
According to the union leader, the price of a standard loaf of bread has been capped at 15 Turkish lira since March 1, 2024. In that time, the minimum wage has tripled, and overall costs for bakeries have risen by an average of 50 percent.
"Despite holding meetings with the Ministry of Economy and presenting updated cost calculations, we have not been able to secure a revision of the fixed price. It is with great regret that we inform the public that we may be forced to stop producing bread as early as next week," Çıralı said.
