First Turkish Cypriot in British Parliament Sworn in on the Quran
The first Turkish Cypriot MP has taken office in the British Parliament. Nesil Caliskan took the oath with her hand on the Quran.
A video of the swearing-in moment is gaining popularity on social media. According to British regulations, each MP can take the oath according to their own faith and holy book. Muslim MPs, including Nesil Caliskan, took their oaths on the Quran.
Two other Muslim female MPs, Shabana Mahmood and Naz Shah, also took their oaths on the Quran and began their parliamentary duties.
Last week, the opposition Labour Party won the British parliamentary elections.
Nesil Caliskan, 35, nominated by the Labour Party in Barking, east of London, became the first Turkish Cypriot MP elected to the British Parliament. She garnered about 45% of the vote in her constituency, totaling 16,227 votes.
