President of the TRNC congratulated citizens on Labor Day - May 1
TRNC President Ersin Tatar addressed the occasion of May 1, International Workers' Solidarity Day. The head of Northern Cyprus stated that "the contribution of workers is the most important element for the state and the country."
In his address, Ersin Tatar noted that May 1 "once again reminds us of the value of labor and workers and strengthens the spirit of solidarity and unity."
"We know that the contribution of workers and employees is the most important element for the state and the country. Therefore, we consider it our duty to maximize production, improve working conditions, and the standard of living of this segment, protecting and enhancing their rights. Turkish Cypriots have come to this day thanks to the strenuous struggle of their workers, business representatives, teachers, and civil servants. It will be the same in the future. Together, we will overcome difficulties and lead our country towards a better and brighter tomorrow," the head of state's address said.
In his message, the leader of Turkish Cypriots also reminded of the events that occurred on May 3-4, 1886, at Haymarket Square in Chicago. As a result of clashes that erupted during a rally in support of workers' demands for an 8-hour workday, several policemen and demonstrators were killed.
In July 1889, the Paris Congress of the Second International, at the suggestion of American workers who had planned their strike for May 1, 1890, declared this date as the Day of Workers' Solidarity worldwide. Since then, May Day has been celebrated in many countries, including the TRNC.
"I sincerely congratulate all our citizens who work, produce, and toil selflessly in the name of the development and progress of our country on Labor and Solidarity Day, May 1. You are the most valuable elements building our future," Ersin Tatar congratulated workers.
It is worth noting that on May 1, a joint event of trade union organizations of the two communities of the island will take place in the buffer zone in Cyprus.
