The Cyprus Turkish Secondary Education Teachers’ Union (KTOEÖS) and the Cyprus Turkish Teachers’ Union (KTÖS) have announced a strike. The protest is scheduled to take place today at 12:00 PM in front of the Prime Minister’s Office.

According to a joint statement issued by the unions, the protest was sparked by recent strikes at Bekirpaşa Secondary School and increasing pressure from the government. The unions claim that the coalition government continues to make decisions in violation of the Constitution and existing laws.

The statement also notes that pressure on the striking teachers at Bekirpaşa Secondary School has intensified, and that students’ rights have been infringed.

“One student wearing a headscarf faced obstacles during her midterm exams, classroom doors were locked, and teachers were prevented from carrying out their duties. Despite these violations, the Council of Ministers banned the strike at Bekirpaşa Secondary School, which had been declared by KTOEÖS. In doing so, the government sought to impose its ideological agenda,” the statement said.
