From the beginning of the year, one murder and 17 cases of rape occurred in Northern Cyprus
The TRNC (Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus) police have released statistics on crimes against women committed in the country over the first 10 months of 2023. The list includes one murder and 17 cases of sexual violence.
According to the police press service, from January 1 to November 21, 2023, the Violence Prevention Unit received 831 complaints. The reports included one case of a woman being murdered, 423 cases of physical violence, and 181 cases of verbal abuse. Additionally, 17 statements were related to sexual violence, and 209 complaints were associated with other offenses.
The statement notes that all complaints and reports were carefully reviewed and investigated, and necessary legal measures were taken in response.
It is also highlighted that the "Department for Responding to Violence Against Women" was first established in the Nicosia Police Department in 2018 to more effectively combat crimes against women. In 2021, the corresponding branch was created in the Main Police Department and in all district departments.
