Since the beginning of 2024, road accidents in North Cyprus have resulted in 24 fatalities. The Nicosia Northern Ring Road remains one of the most hazardous roads.

According to statistics, 24 people lost their lives on the roads of the TRNC in 2022, 48 in 2023, and already 24 in 2024.

The Nicosia Northern Ring Road, notorious for its high number of fatal accidents, was opened on July 20, 2021. The construction tender for this road was issued in 2012.

Kibris Postasi, citing road safety experts, reports that the road is not fully completed, and essential safety measures have not yet been implemented, putting drivers at significant risk.

Statistics highlight the danger, with four fatalities already recorded on this road, which was intended to ease urban and inter-district traffic in Nicosia.

Minister of Public Works and Transportation, Erhan Arıklı, has acknowledged the road's shortcomings.

The minister stated that the department is currently seeking funding to install lighting on the Nicosia Northern Ring Road. Ongoing negotiations with the Ministry of Finance aim to secure the necessary resources. Lighting installation will commence once funding is available, with plans to complete the project promptly.

Minister Arıklı also highlighted the importance of the multi-level intersection project on the Kyrenia-Nicosia road. This project is expected to reduce traffic congestion at the Gönyeli roundabout and connect the existing road to Alayköy via a 4 to 4.5 kilometer route.
