A family attempted to fly from the TRNC to Germany with fake passports but ended up in jail
Police at Istanbul Airport detained a family attempting to fly from the TRNC to Germany with fake passports. The parents with children were sent back to Northern Cyprus; they will spend the next two months in jail.
According to a police representative, the suspects were arrested on charges of "impersonation" and "obtaining records by false pretenses." Yesterday, the detainees returned to the TRNC and appeared in court.
According to case materials, the incident occurred on April 30, 2024. Around 12:45, an Iranian family with children checked in at Ercan Airport using Danish passports issued under false names.
It is known that they purchased the documents from an unknown person for 6,000 euros. The family left Northern Cyprus with their Iranian passports and headed to Istanbul to catch a connecting flight to Germany. However, they did not manage to fly further as the police were able to identify the counterfeit documents in time.
The suspects were discovered by immigration police at Istanbul Airport and sent back to the TRNC the same evening. According to the police, the family was residing in the country without legal status.
Based on the testimony presented, the judge ruled that the suspects would be held in jail for no more than 2 months.
