Hundreds of passengers and the Minister of Transport were stranded at Ercan Airport
On Wednesday afternoon, due to a malfunction in the electrical equipment at Ercan Airport, air traffic control systems were temporarily shut down. Flights were temporarily suspended due to the malfunction.
According to Kibris Postasi, among the flights unable to take off from the airfield due to equipment problems was an aircraft carrying the Minister of Public Works and Transport, Erhan Arikli.
In an interview with the publication, the minister emphasized that the generator issue was soon resolved, and the aircraft was granted permission to take off. However, due to the airport's operational failure, "hundreds of passengers" suffered, unable to leave Northern Cyprus and fly to their destinations on time.
Erhan Arikli stated that the problem arose because the backup generator in the old airport building was not activated in time. The head of the Ministry of Transport promised to conduct an investigation into the incident and determine who was responsible for the failure.
"Technical malfunction or blatant sabotage? We will conduct an investigation," the minister declared.
