The court released two suspects in the murder of a Russian in Kyrenia
The court released two out of the three individuals detained on suspicion of involvement in the high-profile murder of a Russian in Kyrenia. The third accused admitted guilt and recently appeared in court again.
Upon the expiration of the detention period, the court released Katerina Kotenko and Andrey Volkovskiy due to their lack of involvement in the crime. Sergey Mikhaylichenko, who confessed to the murder, remains under investigation.
Recall that the gruesome crime, which shocked the entire Russian-speaking community in Northern Cyprus, occurred in the heart of Kyrenia on Monday, November 27. Russian citizen Mikhail Kamyshanov was strangled at his workplace in the premises of İmaj Photo Studio on Uğur Mumcu Boulevard. A bag with a significant amount of cash disappeared from the crime scene.
The police reported that during the investigation of the Russian's murder, surveillance camera footage was examined. Initially, Sergey Mikhaylichenko, Katerina Kotenko, and Andrey Volkovskiy were arrested as suspects.
All three were brought to court twice, and their detention was extended several times during the investigation. During the 10 days the suspects were in custody, the police interviewed 54 witnesses, recorded 38 statements, and analyzed 14 images from surveillance cameras.
In his statement on December 2, Sergey Mikhaylichenko confessed to the murder and revealed the location of the murdered man's mobile phones.
It is also reported that the previously missing bag of Mikhail Kamyshanov contained $40,000, £12,500, and €6,500 in cash. Part of the money has already been found.
The court decided to keep the suspect Sergey Mikhaylichenko in custody for another 7 days.
