The court released on bail 19 participants in the mass brawl in Nicosia
Yesterday, 19 people accused of participating in a mass brawl on Zahra Street in the old town of Nicosia appeared before the court. All suspects were released on bail: they are prohibited from leaving the territory of Northern Cyprus.
As a police representative told during the court hearing, one of the suspects, who has not yet been arrested, placed golf clubs in a car before going to the scene of the brawl with one of the already arrested young men.
It is also reported that as a result of the brawl, one of the four suspects who had not reached the age of 18 was seriously injured. The injuries were inflicted by a suspect who has not yet been arrested.
Following the judicial session, all 19 individuals were released on various bails depending on the severity of their crimes and their age.
The court prohibited the suspects from leaving the country and required them to appear in court once a week.
It is worth adding that during the previous court hearing held on Monday, Prosecutor Senem Palabıyık stated that the brawl "caused outrage in society," while Nicosia Mayor Mehmet Harmancı called the brawl "power exercises conducted by mafia groups."
Recall that the mass brawl in the most popular entertainment district of Nicosia occurred late in the evening on February 22nd. What exactly the young people disagreed on is not reported, however, judging by the videos posted on social media from the scene, sticks, stones, and even tables and chairs from local cafes were involved.
About 150 young people aged approximately between 17 and 22 participated in the scuffle. As later reported by the police, many of them are well-known to law enforcement for their involvement in local youth groups and have had previous run-ins with the law.
