Fires Cause One Million Lira in Damages Across Northern Cyprus in Just One Week

Over the span of a single week, Northern Cyprus recorded 13 fires and 33 emergency incidents requiring intervention by rescue teams. According to the weekly report from the Police General Directorate, the total damage caused by the fires is estimated at one million Turkish lira.

Between May 5 and 11, four fires were triggered by electrical short circuits, three by discarded cigarette butts, and another three by overheating and ignition of hay bales. One incident resulted from a fuel leak in a vehicle’s engine compartment, while another was caused by oil left unattended in a deep fryer. Two fires were confirmed to be acts of arson.

The incidents were spread across various regions: three occurred in Nicosia, two each in Kyrenia, İskele, Geçitkale, and Güzelyurt, and one each in Famagusta and Vadili.

Beyond firefighting, emergency crews responded to a wide range of rescue situations. These included freeing people trapped in elevators and vehicles after accidents, rescuing cats stuck in engine compartments and on rooftops, saving dogs caught in bicycles or fallen into wells, and even pulling a lamb out of a well.

Firefighters also helped manage road safety, implemented fire prevention measures, organized educational programs, and handled the transport of deceased individuals to hospitals for forensic examinations.

Of the 33 emergency cases, 15 were reported in Nicosia, seven in Kyrenia, four in Famagusta, three in Güzelyurt, two in İskele, and one each in Geçitkale and Yeşilköy.
