Fire and Rescue Drills Conducted at Ercan Airport
Firefighting and rescue exercises were held at Ercan Airport in collaboration with the "Meydan" fire brigade of the Department of Civil Aviation, Ministry of Public Works and Transportation, along with the Nicosia Fire Service. The drills followed a three-stage scenario.
According to the scenario, during the first stage, a traffic accident involving two vehicles occurred at the exit of the Ercan Airport tunnel. One vehicle caught fire, while a person became trapped in the other. Upon receiving notification, the "Meydan" fire brigade promptly extinguished the fire and rescued the trapped individual, who was then transported to Nicosia.
In the second stage, a fire broke out due to a road traffic incident at the tunnel exit, spreading to the airport premises and reaching the runway area. The Ercan Airport fire brigades effectively managed the situation.
During the third stage, a fire broke out in the "smart building" of the Department of Civil Aviation due to a short circuit in the electrical system. Several individuals were trapped in the smoke-filled building. The Ercan Airport fire service teams, along with their colleagues from the Nicosia Fire Service, successfully extinguished the fire and rescued the individuals.
Erhan Arikli, Minister of Public Works and Transportation, observed the exercises at the air harbor. Following the conclusion of the maneuvers, the Minister expressed gratitude to the Department of Civil Aviation, the Nicosia Fire Service, and the British Kolan Hospital for their support in providing an ambulance for the drills.
The Minister also highlighted the relocation of the "Meydan" fire brigade to a new building equipped with modern facilities, adjacent to the new terminal at Ercan Airport.
"Our 'Meydan' fire brigade has once again demonstrated its ability to protect Ercan Airport from all types of fire hazards," stated the Minister.
