An automatic meteorological station has been installed at Ercan Airport, costing 35 million Turkish lira.

According to Sinan Güneş, Director of the Department of Meteorology of the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation, the installation of the Automatic Weather Observing System (AWOS) at Ercan Airport is complete. If the tests are successful, the system will be operational within 15 days.

In accordance with international standards, the AWOS has been installed at the edge of the runway to continuously and accurately monitor weather data at Ercan Airport. Ground installation work around the runway was completed with technical support from the Meteorology Department, the contracting company, and the manufacturer’s teams.

The AWOS, which is crucial for flight safety at airports, consists of sensors that measure various meteorological parameters, data collection units, and communication interfaces. These systems enhance flight safety by continuously monitoring parameters such as wind speed and direction, temperature, humidity, pressure, and precipitation.

The system was created in accordance with the recommendations and standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

“With the implementation of this system, Ercan Airport, which has served at Category 1 (CAT1) level for many years, will be upgraded to Category 2 (CAT2) and become an airport where flights are conducted in a much safer environment,” said a department representative.
