19-Year-Old Girl Dies in Northern Cyprus Traffic Accident; Four Others Injured
A devastating traffic accident occurred over the weekend in Northern Cyprus, leaving a 19-year-old girl dead and four others injured.
The accident happened on Saturday evening around 7:20 PM on Ugur Mumcu Street in the Karakum area of Kyrenia. A 75-year-old driver traveling from Çatalköy toward Kyrenia hit three pedestrians crossing the road near the “Metropol” supermarket.
The pedestrians were identified as:
- Sukaina Kirba, 19 years old – died at the scene.
- Aya Bulhanni, 18 years old – sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital in Nicosia.
- Hawla Ferdous, 21 years old – sustained less severe injuries and was taken to Dr. Akçiçek Hospital in Kyrenia.
After striking the pedestrians, the vehicle collided with two other cars traveling in the same direction.
The driver and a passenger in the striking vehicle were also injured and transported to Dr. Akçiçek Hospital for treatment.
Second Accident During Investigation
Later that evening, at around 9:20 PM, a second accident occurred near the Erden Market at the Ozanköy intersection. A vehicle struck a police officer who was directing traffic due to the earlier accident. The officer had been blocking the road and managing traffic flow from Çatalköy toward Kyrenia.
The injured officer was transported to Dr. Akçiçek Hospital, where he is receiving medical care.
Kyrenia Mayor Murat Şenkul expressed his condolences following the death of Sukaina Kirba. He described the fatal accident as a tragedy that deeply affected him and the entire community. Şenkul also highlighted the pressing traffic safety issues facing Kyrenia and the broader region.
The police investigation into both incidents is ongoing.
