Serial Thieves Caught on Camera Arrested in Gönyeli
Police in Northern Cyprus have arrested four individuals linked to a string of thefts that left residents of the Yenikent neighborhood in Gönyeli on edge. The suspects carried out several burglaries in full view of surveillance cameras on one of the town’s busiest streets.
According to the police press office, one of the incidents occurred on April 17 around 1:00 a.m., when two men broke into the kitchen of a private home. Caught on security camera footage, they fled the scene as soon as the homeowners woke up. The frustrated resident later shared the video on social media, drawing public attention to the case.
Once the incident was reported, Nicosia’s Crime Prevention Unit and the Gönyeli Police Department launched a joint investigation. Four young suspects were arrested: a 20-year-old woman and three men aged 20, 24, and 25. All are believed to be involved in multiple thefts in the area.
During questioning, police discovered that on the same night—April 17—the group had stolen a makeup bag from a car parked on Ekim Street, No. 29, in Yenikent. The bag reportedly contained €1,000, 500 Turkish lira in cash, and luxury cosmetics. Surveillance cameras also captured the suspects attempting to break into several other cars near the Gönyeli Yenikent Levent apartment complex.
The investigation is ongoing.
