In July, Accumulated Traffic Fines Will Be Sent to TRNC Residents

Last week in Northern Cyprus, a tender was announced for the delivery of notifications regarding speeding fines issued using traffic cameras. These fines haven't been issued since February 2023. Authorities are considering installment payment options.

According to the Kıbrıs Postası publication, all fines will be sent to the violating drivers simultaneously in July. As per the tender terms, the winning company must collect half of the fines.

Since authorities are concerned that it might be challenging for motorists to pay all their accumulated fines at once, an installment plan may be introduced for payment. Additionally, authorities are considering the possibility of introducing an "amnesty for fines on driver's licenses."

Speaking to Kıbrıs Postası, Minister of Public Works and Transport Erhan Arıklı stated that the payment installment and amnesty issues will be discussed at the Council of Ministers meeting.

The Minister explained that according to the technical specifications of the tender for collecting fines using cameras, companies are required to collect half of the fines. It is anticipated that the remaining half will be collected by the police.

Erhan Arıklı also expressed a desire for all fine collections to be carried out by the police, but "this was not possible for technical reasons," according to the Prime Minister. The final decision of the Council of Ministers will be announced soon.

Recall that the scandal surrounding fines from traffic cameras erupted in Northern Cyprus at the end of last year. Since February 2023, not a single fine has been issued in the TRNC for speeding.

According to local media reports, the government failed to announce a tender for the collection of fixed fines. Losses amounted to at least 150 million Turkish liras in the last nine months of 2023.

It was reported that there are 130 stationary radars in the TRNC, 100 of which were active at that time. However, in 2023, not a single Turkish lira was collected through these cameras because there was no tender for delivering fines to addresses.

The necessary tender for the delivery of fine notifications was announced in Northern Cyprus just last week.
