Clearing the aftermath of flooding in Kyrenia: residential building evacuated
Efforts to mitigate the aftermath of heavy rainfall continue in Kyrenia. Due to flooding in the area, roads have been destroyed, and a multi-story residential building has been evacuated.
Because of a landslide on the ground floor of a building under construction caused by torrential rains, a multi-story residential building on Kemal Selim Street near the 20 July Stadium in Kyrenia has been evacuated.
The mayor of the city, Murat Shengul, has already responded to the situation. According to the mayor, there is currently no threat of collapse. Field engineers have the situation under control.
Municipal brigades, the Civil Defense Organization, police, and fire teams have been dispatched to the scene. They inspected the affected building and carried out necessary work.
Murat Shengul noted that due to the displacement of soft soil towards the construction site by approximately 1.5-2 meters, two or three residential buildings have been affected. One residential building is very close to the construction site.
Authorities warned residents that staying in these buildings overnight is unsafe. Those with nowhere to go were accommodated in a hotel.
According to technical assessments, there is no risk of the buildings collapsing. Authorities have already contacted the construction site owners, and work on constructing retaining walls will begin soon.
The mayor also reported that problems arose only in those areas of Kyrenia traditionally at risk due to heavy rains.
Recall that some roads were closed for safety reasons. After the water receded, traffic was restored.
Additionally, due to heavy rains, collapses occurred on the Kozan — Karşıyaka road. The road is closed to traffic.
