In the TRNC, a British Citizen Imprisoned for a Theft Committed 21 Years Ago
In Northern Cyprus, a British citizen has been sentenced to one year of imprisonment for stealing money from her employer. Twenty-one years ago, the woman stole 986 Turkish lira and fled the country after being released on bail.
As reported by Yeniduzen, Leslie Francis Huosem found herself in the defendant's dock at the Supreme Criminal Court of Kyrenia. During the court session, it was revealed that in 2002, the defendant worked as an accountant in one of the companies and stole 986 Turkish lira from her employer, then fled the country. After returning to Northern Cyprus this year, the woman was arrested.
According to the judge, the maximum penalty for theft entails up to 7 years of imprisonment. Moreover, the fact that the accused fled the country became an aggravating factor.
It is noted that the defendant returned 916 Turkish lira of the stolen amount, but the employer has not received compensation to this day, as the stolen sum is equivalent to 28,400 Turkish lira.
The judge also remarked that the committed crime "undermined the trust between the employer and the employee." After evaluating all the facts, the judge sentenced the defendant to one year of imprisonment.
