The TRNC Considers Resuming Connections with the Syrian Port of Latakia

Northern Cyprus is exploring the possibility of resuming maritime and air connections with the Syrian port city of Latakia. The issue was raised during a meeting between Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and TRNC Minister of Public Works and Transportation Erhan Arıklı.

Speaking on a BRT program about the outcomes of the meeting, Arıklı shared that discussions centered on reviving ferry services between Famagusta and Latakia, Syria’s key Mediterranean port, as well as flights between Ercan Airport and Latakia.

Arıklı noted that the proposal to reopen the Famagusta-Latakia connection was prompted by the improved relations between Turkey and Syria under the new Syrian administration.

• “Ferry services between Famagusta and Latakia were operational in the past. I emphasized that we should work to further expand the international use of Famagusta Port, starting with Latakia,” Arıklı said. He also mentioned that flights between Ercan Airport and Latakia could be reinstated in the future.

The minister added that the Cyprus issue was another topic of discussion during the meeting.

Previously, at a joint press conference with TRNC President Ersin Tatar, Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan highlighted the isolation faced by Turkish Cypriots, describing it as “a silent crime against humanity.” He called on the international community to recognize the two-state status of Cyprus.

Fidan concluded his two-day visit to the TRNC last night, departing from Ercan Airport to Istanbul along with his delegation.
