Foundation Laid for Cloverleaf Interchange on Nicosia's Northern Ring Road in the TRNC
The foundation for a new cloverleaf interchange on the Northern Ring Road of Nicosia and the main Nicosia–Kyrenia road has been laid in the TRNC. The construction of this key transport hub is expected to be completed by April.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Turkey's Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, and the TRNC Minister of Public Works and Transport, Erhan Arıklı.
According to the TRNC Minister of Transport, the new multi-level interchange, set to be completed by April, will greatly ease traffic congestion at the Gönyeli roundabout.
The Turkish Minister of Transport highlighted that diverting transit traffic away from the city via the Northern Ring Road will significantly reduce traffic congestion in Nicosia and its surrounding areas.
"Once the entire road is operational, travel time will be reduced from 21 minutes to just 9 minutes. This project will save a total of 1.371 billion lira annually, including 1.3 billion lira in time savings and 70 million lira in fuel costs," said Abdulkadir Uraloğlu.
For context, the Northern Ring Road of Nicosia begins at the Alayköy junction, connects to the Haspolat roundabout in the east, and then leads to the Kyrenia mountain road. An 11-kilometer stretch of this road was opened to traffic on July 20, 2021. The foundation laid yesterday marks the start of construction on the second section of the project, which spans 4.6 kilometers.
