Six Lives Lost in Traffic Accidents Across Northern Cyprus Last Week
Over the past week, Northern Cyprus saw a total of 76 traffic accidents, tragically resulting in six fatalities and leaving 16 people injured.
According to the weekly report released by the General Directorate of Police, five of these accidents were fatal, 16 caused injuries, and the remaining 55 resulted in material damage.
The total estimated financial damage from the accidents reached 4,122,014 Turkish lira.
Causes of the Accidents
The analysis identified the primary causes of the accidents as follows:
- Speeding: Responsible for 22 accidents.
- Reckless driving: Led to 14 accidents.
- Failure to stop at intersections: Caused 18 accidents.
- Not maintaining a safe distance: Accounted for 12 accidents.
- Other reasons: Contributed to 10 accidents.
Regional Breakdown
The accidents were distributed across major regions as follows:
- Nicosia: 16 accidents.
- Famagusta: 21 accidents.
- Kyrenia: 24 accidents.
- Güzelyurt: 6 accidents.
- İskele: 9 accidents.
Police Actions
During the same week, police inspected 14,253 vehicles. A total of 2,502 violations were recorded. Of these:
- 229 vehicles were banned from further use.
- 9 drivers were arrested for serious offenses.
While authorities continue to monitor and enforce traffic regulations, these figures highlight the critical importance of safe driving practices to prevent further tragedies.
