The Republic of Cyprus has seven universities, not a few in a country with a population of less than a million. They are three public and four private universities. In addition, on the southern part of the island, there is a large selection of private institutions and about twelve colleges.

Higher Education has three stages: bachelor's degree (4 years), master's degree (2 years), and postgraduate studies (3-6 years). Private universities teach mainly in English, and state universities - in Greek. For example, the University of Cyprus teaches only in Greek and Turkish. Such is the country's policy, as they expect that mainly Cypriots will enter local universities. Students may also study in Russian and French, but only in a few private institutions.
