What makes Blue Lagoon interesting
Blue Lagoon is located on the coast of the Akamas Peninsula. The bay is protected by a rocky shore, and its light sandy bottom reflects sunlight well. That is why the water takes on bright blue and turquoise shades.
The water here is usually clear, so the lagoon is suitable for snorkeling. On the bottom you can see sandy patches, rocks, marine vegetation, and small fish. At the same time, Blue Lagoon is not an equipped urban beach: the shore is mostly rocky, and most visitors enter the water directly from boats.
The depth varies depending on the area. Near the shore and above the light bottom there are shallow zones, but around the boats and closer to the mouth of the bay the water can be significantly deeper.
Two Blue Lagoons in Cyprus
The name Blue Lagoon is used for two different places in the Republic of Cyprus:
- Akamas Blue Lagoon is located in the northwest of the island, near Latchi and the Baths of Aphrodite - location ;
- Blue Lagoon near Cape Greco is located in the southeast of the island, between Ayia Napa and Protaras - location.
This article is about the bay on the Akamas Peninsula. When booking an excursion or planning a route, you should check the departure point: trips to the Akamas lagoon usually start in Latchi, while sea trips to Cape Greco depart from Ayia Napa or Protaras.
Swimming and infrastructure
In Blue Lagoon you can swim, use a mask and snorkel, and enter the water from an excursion boat or private boat. Some tour boats provide life jackets and swimming equipment, but the range of services depends on the operator.
There is no regular beach infrastructure on the shore of the lagoon:
- there is no organized area with sun loungers and umbrellas;
- there are no showers or changing rooms;
- there are no shops, cafes, or drinking water;
- there is no permanently operating lifeguard service;
- the rocky shore is not suitable for all visitors.
The main infrastructure is concentrated in Latchi, at the Baths of Aphrodite, and in Polis. Before a sea trip, it is better to buy water, sunscreen, and everything you need for swimming in advance.
When to visit
For swimming, Blue Lagoon is most often visited from late spring to autumn. In July and August there are especially many excursion boats and private boats here. Those who prefer a quieter atmosphere are better off choosing an early trip or coming outside the peak summer months.
Sea trips depend on the wind and sea conditions. Even in summer, a trip may be postponed or canceled because of bad weather. Before leaving for Latchi, it is worth checking the trip confirmation with the operator.
In spring and autumn the water temperature may be lower, but these months are suitable for combining a sea trip with hiking routes around Akamas. In summer, long walks by land are made more difficult by the heat and lack of shade.
How to get to Blue Lagoon
The main ways to reach the lagoon are:
- buy a ticket for an excursion boat from the port of Latchi;
- rent a motorboat in Latchi;
- join an organized excursion with transfer;
- drive along the dirt road in suitable off-road transport;
- walk part of the route from the Baths of Aphrodite area.
For most visitors, the easiest option remains a sea trip from Latchi. It does not require driving on a difficult road and allows you to see the rocky coast of Akamas from the sea.
Boat trip from Latchi
Excursion boats depart from the harbor of Latchi. Usually the route runs along the northern coast of Akamas and includes a stop at Blue Lagoon for swimming. The duration of the trip, the length of the stop, and the included services vary.
Before buying a ticket, it is worth clarifying:
- how long the whole trip lasts;
- how long the boat stays in the lagoon;
- whether transfer to Latchi is included;
- whether masks, snorkels, and life jackets are provided;
- whether there is a toilet and shade on board;
- whether drinks or meals are included;
- what the cancellation conditions are in bad weather.
On larger excursion boats there are usually more passengers and basic amenities. Smaller boats offer a more intimate trip, but may react more strongly to rough seas.
Boat rental
In the harbor of Latchi there are companies renting motorboats with a captain or for self-driving. The requirements depend on the boat’s power, the operator’s rules, the renter’s age, and their experience.
Before renting, you should clarify:
- whether a license is needed for the chosen boat;
- what minimum age is set by the company;
- whether fuel is included in the price;
- what deposit is required;
- what area is allowed for sailing;
- what to do if the weather changes or a technical fault occurs;
- whether there is communication equipment, a first-aid kit, and life jackets for all passengers on board.
Before departure, staff should provide instructions and show how to operate the boat. You should not rent a vessel for independent sailing without confident skills, especially in wind or waves.

Trip by land
By an ordinary car you can easily drive on the paved road to Latchi and the Baths of Aphrodite. Beyond that, toward Blue Lagoon, a dirt coastal route begins with rocks, uneven surfaces, narrow sections, and cliffs.
Driving on this road in an ordinary city car is not recommended. Many rental companies prohibit driving on dirt roads, and damage to the undercarriage, tires, or suspension off asphalt may not be covered by insurance.
Even having a four-wheel-drive vehicle does not guarantee safe passage. Road conditions depend on works, rainfall, and temporary restrictions. Before the trip you need to:
- check the current condition of the route;
- study the rental agreement conditions;
- not rely solely on the car navigator;
- not set out on the difficult section after sunset;
- have water, a charged phone, and extra time.
For trips on the paved roads of the Paphos area and to Latchi, rental options can be compared through Localrent. Permission to drive on dirt roads must be checked separately in the terms of the specific rental company.
Public transport
There is no direct city bus to Blue Lagoon. By public transport you can reach the Baths of Aphrodite area, but the remaining part of the route must be done on foot or continued by sea.
From Paphos you first need to get to Polis bus station. Route No. 622 runs between Polis, Latchi, and the Baths of Aphrodite. The schedule may change, so it must be checked before traveling on the carrier’s website.
The walk from the Baths of Aphrodite to Blue Lagoon cannot be considered a short walk to the beach. The route runs along an open dirt road without shade and requires water, suitable shoes, and time for the return journey. In the summer heat, this option is suitable only for physically fit travelers.

What to bring and safety rules
- Drinking water and a light snack.
- A hat and sunscreen.
- Swimwear and a towel.
- A mask and snorkel if they are not provided on the boat.
- Water shoes — they will be useful on rocky sections.
- A waterproof case for your phone and documents.
- Motion sickness medication if you are prone to seasickness.
While swimming, you must stay at a safe distance from maneuvering boats and not swim beyond the area indicated by the crew. Children and people who are not confident in the water should use life jackets.
Blue Lagoon is located in a natural area. You must not leave litter, damage marine vegetation, drop anchor on protected sections of the seabed, or feed wild animals. All trash brought with you must be taken away.
What to see nearby
Baths of Aphrodite

The circular route starts at the Baths of Aphrodite. Its length is 7.5 km, the approximate hiking time is 3–4 hours, and the official difficulty category is 3. The trail rises to an altitude of more than 300 meters and offers views of Cape Arnaoutis, Polis, and the Akamas coast.
Adonis Trail
Another circular route, 7.5 km long, starts near the Baths of Aphrodite. It partially connects with the Aphrodite Trail and is also intended for prepared visitors.

If you are planning a route to see the main sights of the Republic of Cyprus and want to get around without relying on a taxi, it is convenient to compare car rental options in advance through Localrent. It is also worth thinking about basic everyday things in advance. Travel medical insurance can be arranged before departure, for example through Tripinsurance, and for navigation and communication on the road it is convenient to connect a travel eSIM in advance, for example through Drimsim.
