With Tap to Pay on iPhone, businesses can accept contactless payments directly through a supported iOS app on an iPhone XS or newer — no additional hardware or terminals required. At checkout, the seller simply asks the customer to hold their contactless credit or debit card, iPhone, Apple Watch, or other digital wallet near the merchant’s iPhone. The payment is securely processed using NFC (Near Field Communication) technology.

In partnership with various payment platforms, Tap to Pay on iPhone allows businesses to accept payments from contactless cards, Apple Pay, and other digital wallets — all using just their iPhone and a compatible iOS app. This makes it easier for sellers to accept payments wherever they operate.

“Privacy is built into every payment feature Apple develops,” the company stated. “With Tap to Pay on iPhone, customer payment information is protected using the same technology that makes Apple Pay private and secure. Every transaction is encrypted and processed using the Secure Element, and Apple doesn’t know what was purchased or who made the purchase.”
