In Cyprus, more than 36,000 people use buses every day, according to data released on Tuesday by Cyprus Public Transport (CPT).

Julio Tironi, the CEO of the company, stated that CPT is one of the largest employers in Cyprus and has successfully increased the usage of public transport. Each day, 600 employees transport over 36,000 passengers.

This increase in public transport usage has led to reduced pollution levels and an overall improvement in quality of life.

“Imagine what it would be like if these 36,000 daily passengers decided to use their own cars,” pondered the director of the transport company.

Additionally, in September 2023, a park-and-ride service was launched: around 500 drivers leave their cars outside Nicosia and commute to the city by bus.

Regarding the demographics of passengers, it is noteworthy that public transport in Cyprus is now most frequently used by citizens aged 25 to 50. Previously, passengers were predominantly either younger or older than this age group.

According to the director, the entire bus fleet, some of which are electric, is equipped with 5G Wi-Fi, a first for Europe, which has also been extended to bus stops in Nicosia and Larnaca.

With the installation of new bus stops, ticket sales at stations have been automated. Additionally, a pilot program is underway to improve access for people with disabilities.
