Cyprus' Public Sector Workforce Exceeds 73,000

According to a report released by the Cyprus Statistical Service (Cystat), the total number of public sector employees in Cyprus reached 73,137 in the third quarter of 2024. For the first time, the data includes information on district local government organizations (EOAs), which were established in July 2024.

Of the total, 68,153 people are employed in the public administration sector. Additionally, 4,984 individuals work in state-owned companies and enterprises.

The public administration sector, which encompasses central government, non-profit organizations, and local authorities, employs 52,690, 9,975, and 5,488 individuals, respectively.

Compared to the same period last year, public sector employment grew by 830 people, or approximately 1.1%.

Employment in central government increased by 695 people (1.1%), while local authorities saw a significant rise of 962 people (21.3%).

However, employment in state-controlled companies and enterprises decreased by 827 people, or 14.2%.

When compared to the second quarter of 2024, overall public sector employment dropped by 2,577 people, or 3.4%.
