Two people hospitalized after a powerful explosion in Nicosia
In the suburb of Nicosia, Engomi, a powerful explosion occurred yesterday evening. As a result of the incident, two people were hospitalized.
According to the police press service, the explosion occurred shortly before 19:00 in a two-story residential building in the Makedonitissa area. Preliminary data suggest a gas leak in the apartment on the first floor.
One of the two victims is an 18-year-old homeowner, a student from Greece. The girl suffered first-degree burns to various parts of her body and was hospitalized in the plastic surgery department of Nicosia General Hospital. Treating physicians reported that her condition remains stable.
According to a representative of the fire department, the explosion caused significant damage to the building. It was later revealed that the walls of the building collapsed.
It is noted that there was no fire following the explosion. The fire service is conducting an investigation and inspection of the premises. One of the most likely causes of the explosion is a sudden cessation of gas supply.
"This is the initial assessment we have made, and the exact causes will be investigated later," said a representative of the fire service.
