John Malkovich will attend the Cyprus International Theatre Festival

The Cyprus International Theatre Festival will take place from April 29 to June 16. The honorary guest of the event will be the world-renowned American actor John Malkovich, who will present the play “The Infamous Ramirez Hoffman.”

The festival will mainly take place in Limassol. Audiences will be presented with both local and international productions.

The first performances will begin at the end of April with the premiere of the Berlin troupe's play “Kirill and Friends” titled “Apocalypse Tomorrow,” created by theater director Kirill Serebrennikov. The play will be held at the Pattichio Municipal Theatre in Limassol on April 29 and 30.

In mid-May, American actor John Malkovich and famous French pianist Anastasia Terenikova will present the musical show “The Infamous Ramirez Hoffman.” The performance will take place at the Pattichio Municipal Theatre on May 15 and 16.

The production is based on the final chapter of the novel by Chilean writer Roberto Bolaño, “Nazi Literature in the Americas,” and tells the story of the fictional writer Carlos Ramirez Hoffman.

According to John Malkovich, the show “The Infamous Ramirez Hoffman” tells the story of a writer for whom aesthetics intersect with ethics and who believes that a work should be valued above any human ideal. Bolaño's book presents fictional stories of fictional Nazis, most of which have some, albeit minor, connection to the literary world—both real and entirely fictional.

“While I adapted many stories, in the end, I decided to focus on the story of Carlos Ramirez Hoffman. Perhaps someday I will return to visit other characters or in some other, completely different form,” said the American actor.

The festival will conclude in June with performances of the plays “Mahamaya's Electronic Devices” and “The World of Beautiful Butterflies” by Russian and Polish theater and film director, playwright Ivan Vyrypaev, as well as the production “All You Need to Know About Derrida” by Cypriot director Paris Erotokritou.

“Theater is a place where the most existential questions are resolved. Our mission is, on the one hand, to create a new recognized theater brand and thus increase the attractiveness of Cyprus; on the other hand, it is a discussion with the audience about the most pressing issues: fears, anxieties, tolerance, love, and understanding.
