In January 2025, surveillance cameras will be installed in 25 additional schools across the Republic of Cyprus.

Elias Markatzis, a representative of the Ministry of Education, shared in an interview with the daily Philenews that the list of schools selected for camera installation was based on an assessment of the risk of vandalism and the frequency of such incidents. As part of a nationwide initiative, surveillance will be expanded to 50 schools. The first 25 schools will have cameras installed in January.

The required funding for the equipment and installation has already been allocated. In some cases, the installation of cameras may cost up to 10,000 euros.

While the initial plan covers 50 schools, other educational institutions may be added to the list depending on the circumstances.

It’s worth noting that as part of a pilot program aimed at combating violence, surveillance cameras were previously installed in ten schools in Cyprus.
