Football Fans Injure Three Police Officers After AEL – Apollon Derby Cancelled

On Sunday evening in Limassol, three police officers were injured during clashes with football fans following the cancellation of the derby between local clubs Apollon and AEL.

According to the Republic of Cyprus press office, the decision to cancel the match was made after several incidents occurred before the game started. Fans set a small fire near the stadium, and Molotov cocktails were found nearby. Additionally, AEL fans attempted to force their way into the stadium and sprayed paint aerosols at police and stadium staff. Consequently, the referee and a stadium security officer decided to cancel the match to ensure the safety of the fans.

This decision led to even more unrest. Fans began throwing stones and Molotov cocktails at the police, who responded by using the Aiantas water cannon.

"After the announcement that the match would not take place, fans in the stands started using flares and torches. As fans were leaving the stadium, they attacked the police, resulting in injuries to three officers, one of whom was seriously hurt," said a statement from the Cypriot police.

Preliminary reports indicate that one of the officers suffered a traumatic patellar tear on his left leg and has undergone surgery.

An investigative team has been formed to look into the incidents. Authorities have already arrested four suspects in connection with the attack on the police. Two of the detainees are 17 years old, one is 18, and the fourth is 21. All are being held in custody pending court proceedings.

It is worth noting that the derby between AEL and Apollon is classified as a "high-risk game," which initially raised concerns among law enforcement.

In anticipation of potential disturbances and outbreaks of violence, authorities closed several streets in the city.
