The Ghost Town of Varosha Welcomed Nearly Two Million Foreign Tourists
Since the opening of the Varosha territory, the ghost town has been visited by 1,821,000 local and foreign tourists. Once considered one of the world's most sought-after tourist centers with modern architecture.
Recall that this area was seized by Turkish armed forces in 1974 during the Cyprus operation.
In the same year, by decision of the UN Security Council, it was closed for resettlement. The area is located on the "green line" dividing the island into two parts and serves as a buffer zone. It remained closed for 46 years.
The ghost town of Varosha began to gradually open to tourists on October 8, 2020. Over the years, roads have been renovated, bike paths built, and beaches along the coast opened on the abandoned territory open to visitors.
In 2021, a national garden was opened in the territory of the popular tourist attraction.
Additionally, the historic 200-year-old Bilal Ağa Mosque (Bilal Ağa Mescidi) has been restored and opened to visitors.
According to TRT News, since the opening of Varosha, it has welcomed 1,821,000 visitors.
The administration of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus continues to work on the process of opening Varosha.
