Snow Blankets Cyprus’ Troodos Mountains in Mid-April
On April 13, the Troodos Mountains in Cyprus were unexpectedly blanketed in snow. Following a heavy snowfall, locals took to social media to share breathtaking images of the snow-covered peaks—a rare and beautiful sight for mid-April.
The snow began falling early Sunday morning and continued throughout the day. By evening, the snow depth in Chionistra had reached 7 centimeters. Thick fog also settled over the area, prompting police to issue safety warnings. The road to Mount Olympus was only accessible to four-wheel-drive vehicles or cars equipped with snow chains.
Beyond the snowfall, several parts of the island were hit by heavy rains and storms. A yellow weather warning was in effect for the entire island, but the most severe conditions were concentrated in mountainous and western regions. Strong storms struck the Paphos area early in the morning, and by midday, heavy rain had also affected higher elevations. Inland areas and other coastal regions experienced milder weather.
Fortunately, conditions are expected to improve starting today. No more rain or storms are in the forecast, and temperatures will gradually rise—reaching up to 30°C in the coming days. As of this morning, the snow measured 2 centimeters in Troodos Square and 4 centimeters in Chionistra.
