Interpol: Over Ten Organized Crime Groups Operating in Cyprus

According to the World Organized Crime Index and Interpol, there are over 10 organized crime groups operating in Southern Cyprus. The research indicates an increase in crime in the country.

According to Philenews, based on the 2023 World Organized Crime Index report, published every two years, more than 10 organized criminal communities operate in the Republic of Cyprus.

These organizations mainly consist of foreign nationals, hailing from the Caucasus, Eastern Europe, and Asia.

It is also reported that these gangs are primarily involved in drug trafficking, contraband of tobacco products, extortion, blackmail, as well as illegal betting and match-fixing in football.

It is claimed that many criminals wanted by Interpol and cooperating with criminal organizations in the Republic of Cyprus may be hiding in the TRNC.

The publication notes that the research "confirms the increase in crime in Cyprus over the past few years, culminating in contract killings committed in broad daylight."

Recall, last week, an assassination attempt was made in Nicosia.

Moreover, over the past few months, there has been a wave of arson, explosions, and other crimes in the country.

It is reported that in 2024, Cyprus saw 55 cases of arson and bombings in 101 days. This equates to one arson or bomb explosion every 44 hours.
