Due to the extreme heat on Wednesday in Cyprus, authorities and meteorologists have issued two warnings: a “red” warning for the high risk of wildfires and a “yellow” warning for high temperatures.

The Cyprus Department of Forestry has declared a “red” danger level today due to the high likelihood of wildfires.

Lighting fires for cooking is only permitted in designated picnic areas. Unauthorized fires in the forest can result in up to ten years in prison and/or fines of up to 50,000 euros.

The public is strongly advised to be extremely vigilant and cautious. If smoke or fire is detected, call 1407 or 112 immediately.

The Meteorological Bureau has also issued a yellow weather warning, in effect until 4:00 PM, due to high temperatures. As previously reported, temperatures are expected to reach up to 41°C today. The Meteorological Bureau also mentioned that isolated storms are possible in the mountains.
