The Cabinet of Cyprus Approves Lowering the Voting Age to 17
The Cabinet of the Republic of Cyprus has passed a bill to reduce the voting age from 18 to 17. This decision follows several months of discussions, with the House of Representatives' Interior Committee first debating the matter back in March.
In addition, the Cabinet approved another bill that will automatically register young people to vote as soon as they reach the minimum voting age.
According to the government, this move is intended to "foster and strengthen a democratic culture among the younger generation" while ensuring "broader participation in the right to vote."
Both bills are set to be presented to parliament for approval.
By lowering the voting age, Cyprus aligns itself with Greece, which made a similar adjustment in 2016.
