Cyprus and Greece Sign Agreements on Kidney and Lung Transplants
The Republic of Cyprus and Greece have signed two bilateral agreements concerning organ transplantation.
According to Health Minister Michalis Hadjipandelas, the first agreement focuses on cross-border kidney transplantation. This arrangement will enable the exchange of organs between the two countries in cases where the donor and recipient are incompatible.
A donor from Cyprus or Greece who is not a suitable match for their recipient can now exchange kidneys with a compatible pair from the other country, thereby increasing the chances of a successful transplant.
The second agreement pertains to lung transplantation. Under this agreement, Cypriot patients will have the opportunity to undergo lung transplants at the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center in Kallithea, Athens, which possesses the necessary expertise and infrastructure.
Furthermore, the agreement allows for the transfer of organs from Cyprus to the National Transplant Organization of Greece if they cannot be used locally. This provision optimizes the management of available organs and ensures a quicker response to patient needs in both countries.
Minister Hadjipandelas stated that the agreements signed on Thursday "demonstrate the commitment of both countries to providing equitable medical care to all individuals, ensuring that no patient is left without necessary assistance, regardless of the rarity of their case."
