Cyprus ranks in the top five EU countries for waste production
The Republic of Cyprus ranks fifth in the EU for the production of solid household waste. Annually, the country generates 673 kilograms of waste per inhabitant.
According to the Statistical Service, the total amount of solid household waste generated in Cyprus in 2022 amounted to 615,000 tons, which is approximately 5% more than the previous year (585,000 tons).
It is also reported that out of 469,000 tons finally disposed of in 2022, 77.5% was deposited in landfills, 17.2% was sent for recycling, 3.1% was used for energy recovery, and 2.2% was sent for composting.
The average volume of household waste production per inhabitant in the EU in 2022 was 513 kg.
The highest level of municipal waste production per capita is recorded in Austria - 835 kg, followed by Denmark, Luxembourg, Belgium, and Cyprus rounding out the top five.
